This site actually started off as a free-as-in-beer print zine for underground musicians. It was probably kind of dumb on our part to think we’d just magically sell enough ads to cover printing and postage. We did sell a few and produced four solid issues before the money ran out, but the phrase, “print is dead, dummy” exists for about a hundred reasons, all of which slapped us silly at one point or another.
In the end, we were faced with a choice:
- Stay the course and get really good at selling ads just to pay the printer and post office
- Switch to a subscription model and get really good at taking money from musicians
- Take it online
- Rob a bank
- Pack it in
For now, we’ll be online. Pretty easy choice, really. It’s not as cool as print but it makes more sense on almost every other level. Hopefully you’ll keep reading.
